Honors Day Celebrates Student Success

The annual Honors Day ceremony was held on April 2. Over 200 students were eligible to be recognized during the ceremony for their academic achievements, scholarship awards, and community service activities.
“The Honors Day ceremony is our chance to celebrate students who have demonstrated excellence in academics, leadership, and service,” said Athens Technical College President Dr. Flora Tydings. “The students recognized this year represent our best and brightest.”
Students received nominations and awards in areas of Campus Service, Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL), Exceptional Adult Georgian Literacy Education (EAGLE), Division Academic Awards, Division Work Ethics Awards, and Student Ambassador of the Year. Several student organizations were highlighted for their commitment to service within the college and community.
Faculty members were recognized for their contributions to student success. Nominees and finalist for the Rick Perkins Award for Excellence in Technical Education included Rob Nichols, anatomy and physiology instructor; Dr. Jackie Wilson, Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Management program chair; Dr. Margaret Chambers, microbiology instructor; Charles Dawson, Diesel Technology program chair; and Dr. Kristi Leatherwood, Adult Education instructor. Dr. Tawana Mattox, First Semester Seminar instructor, was recognized as the college-level winner for the Rick Perkins Award. Student organization officers also had the chance to nominate their advisor for Student Organization Advisor of the Year. Nominees for this year included Howard Sokol, Student Paralegal Association, and Jennifer Turner, Radiography Student Association. John Haley, Alpha Beta Gamma – Chi Zeta Chapter, was named Student Organization Advisor of the Year.
Speakers at the ceremony included Jamisha Dove, EAGLE college-level winner and state finalist; Matt Payne, GOAL college-level winner; and Dr. Tawana Mattox, Rick Perkins Award for Excellence in Technical Instruction college-level winner.
