Dr. Kenneth C. Easom
Retired President, Athens Technical College
Dr. Kennth C. Easom announced his retirement as President of Athens Technical College in the Fall of 2002 after nearly 33 years of service to the college.
Dr. Easom joined the Athens Technical College staff on July 1, 1970, serving in various administrative positions prior to being named to President on July 1, 1985. He earned his doctorate, specialist degrees in education and master's degree from the University of Georgia. Dr. Easom received his bachelor's degree from LaGrange College.
As president, Dr. Easom's long-range vision has guided the college through a number of expansion and renovation projects. Three additional buildings were acquired in order to provide instructional space to serve the growing student population. Dr. Easom also oversaw the construction of two major capital expansion projects in excess of $13 million that provided the needed space to accommodate a growing student population.
One on-campus project provided students with a larger, more user-friendly library, a 200-seat auditorium, and state-of-the-art classrooms equipped with the latest long distance learning technology. The other capital expansion project was the Elbert County Campus - a four-building complex situated on nearly 43 acres of land one mile west of Elberton, Georgia. Major renovations totaling over $3 million were carried out on most of the existing facilities on the Athens campus to ensure that students are provided with a safe, attractive environment to pursue their educational goals.
Dr. Easom worked with the Board of Commissioners in Walton County to open the college's Walton County Center. This facility, which opened in September 1995, made technical and adult education more accessible to the people of Walton County. He also worked closely with the Board of Commissioners of Greene County to open a technical education center in Greene County. Athens Technical College now boasts four campuses.
Under his tenure as President, Athens Technical College was the first technical institute in the State of Georgia to become accredited to award the associate degree by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. This accreditation provided the opportunity for Athens Technical College to develop several highly innovative programs that are providing area companies with qualified graduates. Athens Technical College was the first technical institute in Georgia to offer associate degree programs in nursing, research laboratory technology (biotechnology), radiography, respiratory therapy, and paralegal studies. Dr. Easom also provided the support to develop the institution's library into a facility that supports the needs of a growing, progressive two-year postsecondary institution. He currently serves on the Athens Technical College Foundation Board.
