Flora W. Tydings
Athens Technical College
Dr. Flora Wilhite Tydings was named President of Athens Technical College in July, 2003. Prior to being named President of Athens Technical College, Dr. Tydings was Vice President of Academic Affairs at Central Georgia Technical College. Her career background ranges from teaching high school history classes, to working as a psychometrist in private practice, as well as, owning and operating a gift shop specializing in fine china, crystal and flatware.
Dr. Tydings has successfully implemented new programs at Athens Technical College. During her first six months at the College, she formed a partnership with the Classic Center and Holiday Inn in Athens, Georgia to offer the Hospitality and Tourism Management Program. This program has provided the opportunity for Athens Technical College to have a tremendous impact throughout Athens and the Northeast Georgia region.
In Spring of 2006, she initiated the first major gifts capital campaign to raise private funding for a new Biomanufacturing and Life Science Building on the Athens Campus and an Industrial/Technical Building on the ATC Elbert County Campus.
Dr. Tydings has promoted the Athens Technical College Foundation into a twenty- four member organization that has assets of over one million dollars. She has developed programs through the foundation such as the college's Believe program in which 7th grade students are selected to receive scholarships upon their high school graduation.
Dr. Tydings is Chair of the Bio-Tech Regional Advisory Council committee of the GA Department of Economic Development, Vice-Chair of the Athens/Clarke County Economic Development Foundation, a member of Athens Rotary Club, Partners for a Prosperous Athens, American Technical Educators Association, a member of the DTAE Performance Funding Work Group and the Georgia Technical Educators Association. She serves on the Board of Directors of the Athens/Clarke County Chamber of Commerce.
Dr. Tydings received her doctorate in Occupational Studies from the University of Georgia, a master's degree from Mercer University, and a bachelor's degree from Georgia Southern University.
