Members of the Alpha Beta Gamma International Business Honor Society at Athens Technical College impressed their peer chapters and the overall organization so much with their work this past year that they earned top honors at the honor society’s National Leadership Conference held recently in San Antonio, Texas.

ABG International presented the Chi Zeta chapter at Athens Technical College with the Brooks College Golden Key Award designating it as the best chapter in the nation.

The Brooks College Golden Key Award goes to the chapter that displays overall excellence and superior work, and serves as a model chapter for others to emulate, said John Haley, co-advisor for the Chi Zeta chapter and a Computer Support Specialist instructor at Athens Technical College.

“This marks the first time that Chi Zeta has been recognized as the best chapter throughout all Alpha Beta Gamma chapters,” Haley said. “It was an honor and a very humbling experience to be seen as the premier ABG chapter.”

Chi Zeta members spent many hours this academic year working on several philanthropic projects, including the Jackson County Habitat for Humanity, the Northeast Georgia Food Bank, Soles4Souls, Clothes4Souls, Operation Christmas Child, Soldier Care Packages, and a winter coat drive for the needy.

In addition to being named the nation’s best ABG chapter, Chi Zeta members reaped several other awards at the national conference.

The Chi Zeta chapter as a whole won Best Poster Design for a promotional piece members created to promote chapter involvement. The chapter also got an award for Best National Service Project recognizing their work with the Jackson County Habitat for Humanity group.

Individual members of the Chi Zeta chapter captured awards as well.

Wayne Martin, former chapter president and current national student president, won the Keith Ulich Memorial Essay Competition for his paper about “Living Life to its Fullest.”

Kayla Ballew, current chapter president, picked up The Hausman Siegel Distinguished Chapter President Award that is presented to outstanding chapter presidents whose tenure would serve as a role model for all Alpha Beta Gamma officers. It honors the national network’s best president. Ballew’s recognition marks the third consecutive year that a Chi Zeta chapter president has won the award.

Emily Nix, Chi Zeta chapter executive vice president, won The Eva Bobrow Memorial Medallion of Excellence Award that is given to an officer of the chapter for contributing in an outstanding fashion and achieving excellent results for the chapter.
