Athens Technical College Receives Grant for Out-of-School Youth Initiative
Date: December 21, 2015
Athens Technical College has received funding to provide education and job training for out-of-school youth ages 18-24. Funded by the Northeast Georgia Regional Commission, Bridge to Success provides young people with direct career training and job placement. Eligible individuals can enter the program with or without a high school diploma.
Through the Bridge to Success program, students receive career training in Commercial Truck Driving or Manufacturing Operations. Bridge to Success classes are based at the Athens, Elbert County, and Walton County Campus of Athens Technical College. Bridge to Success at Athens Technical College is open to individuals residing in Clarke, Oglethorpe, Oconee, Elbert, Greene, Hart, Madison, Taliaferro, Walton, and Wilkes counties.
After an intensive two-week work readiness course, students enter career training classes at Athens Technical College. Graduates of the Bridge to Success program receive a technical certificate of credit (TCC) and GeorgiaBEST certification. Bridge to Success will assist students in finding meaningful and gainful on-the-job training opportunities through paid internships. Bridge to Success also provides GED® instruction, employability and work readiness classes, and ongoing job placement assistance. Qualified students will receive full tuition assistance, travel reimbursement, and stipends for completing their GED® (if applicable).
“This is a great opportunity for youth to gain additional skills through educational training and work experience that leads to sustainable median wages of over $13.00 per hour in our service area,” said Stephanie Benson, vice president for Adult Education at Athens Technical College. “We also want to thank the Northeast Georgia Regional Commission for their assistance and support with the Bridge to Success program. The students in this program are being prepared for work in high demand fields and they will help address the workforce needs in our region.”
Bridge to Success is currently enrolling students to begin classes in January. To learn more about the Bridge to Success program, call (706) 583-2551.
