Wine & Cheese Tasting benefit will introduce new culinary scholarship
The Athens Tech Foundation and George’s Lowcountry Table restaurant are offering an opportunity to savor fine wines and cheeses in a fundraiser that will benefit the foundation and promote a new culinary scholarship established in memory of late restaurateur George Davis.
Reggie DiSante, owner of George’s Lowcountry Table, will host the Wine & Cheese Tasting fundraiser from 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, March 27, at his restaurant, 2095 S. Milledge Ave. and is creating the George Davis Memorial Culinary Scholarship to honor his former employer and mentor, restaurateur George Davis. Also on-site will be Brandon Schilling, a cheese specialist for the Atlanta-division Kroger and a certified cheese professional by the American Cheese Society. He will be discussing the cheeses paired with the selected wines.
Mr. Davis was the founder of former Athens eateries Harry Bissett’s New Orleans Café & Oyster Bar and Gus Garcia’s Mexican Cafe. Mr. DiSante began his career in the food service industry under the tutelage of Mr. Davis, and feels a debt of gratitude to his former employer.
“George taught me many things about the restaurant business, including the importance of good food, good wine and good service,” Mr. DiSante said in an interview when he opened George’s Lowcountry Table in 2010.
Mr. DiSante wanted to set up a scholarship through the Athens Tech Foundation in Mr. Davis’ memory and to help aspiring culinary students at Athens Technical College. The ATC Culinary Program recently received a bronze medal for a competition held at The Cloister on Sea Island.
Tickets to the March 27 Wine & Cheese Tasting benefit, which includes specialty hors d’oeuvres, are $50 per person. Proceeds will benefit the Athens Tech Foundation that supports a variety of scholarships for students attending Athens Technical College. Attendees to the fundraiser can also make donations above the event price directly to the George Davis Memorial Culinary Scholarship.
