Biotech lab manager urges recycling participation

As a former member representing Athens Technical College on the  Athens-Clarke County Mayor’s Solid Waste Task Force, Amy Abrahamsen, science laboratory manager for the Biotechnology department at the college, wanted the college community to know about the upcoming America Recycles events that the Athens-Clarke County Solid Waste Department’s Recycling Division will conduct starting Saturday November 10 and running through next week.

The Athens Technical College Athens  Campus recycling site on U.S. Highway 29 just south of the receiving and maintenance building has supplied 4 percent of the total recycling in Clarke County, and for that reason, Ms. Abrahamsen felt like the county’s upcoming recycling events would hold strong interest for members of the college campus.

The events will kick off with the 11th Annual Junk Yard Jog, a Rubbage Ride Mountain Bike Trail and a Trash to Treasures Yard Sale at the Athens-Clarke Landfill, 5700 Lexington Highway. The jog begins at 8:30 a.m.

As part of the special week, the county’s Recycling Division also will offer a chance to bring in difficult to recycle items such as latex paint, car tires, TVs, Styrofoam and fluorescent bulbs. Ms. Abrahamsen encourages all members of the college community to participate in these opportunities, but also to help recycle paper, plastic, aluminum and other material on campus throughout the year.

Here are the times and days for the upcoming special recycling activities:

  • Latex paint (residential) recycling:  9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, November 10, Southern Surplus, 4175 Atlanta Highway
  • Open house and tours at the Recovered Materials Recycling Facility: 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, November 13, 699 Hancock Industrial Way
  • Recycle car tires, car fluids and batteries: 4-7 p.m., Wednesday, November 14, The Body Shop of Athens, 2950 Atlanta Highway
  • Recycle TVs, computers, batteries, Styrofoam and fluorescent bulbs:  5-7 p.m.,  Thursday, November 15, RMRF facility, 699 Hancock Industrial Way
