Howard "Sonny" Turner
Sonny Turner is employed at the Walton Electric Membership Corporation (EMC) where he has served since 1972. After serving initially as Member Services Representative, Sonny was promoted to Director of Marketing and Member Services.
Sonny received a degree from the University of Georgia in Agricultural Education with a minor in Agricultural Engineering. He has continued to dedicate his life to youth and to education. He served on the Athens Technical College Local Board of Directors for many years and served as Chair of that board for two years. He continues to serve as a Trustee on the Athens Tech Foundation Board of Trustees. Sonny served as President of the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Alumni Association, and the University of Georgia (UGA) College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Alumni Association. In addition, Sonny served on the Dean's Advisory Council for the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. An ardent advocate of education, Sonny served on the founding board of the Walton County Community and Schools Program, and he was instrumental in the formation of the Walton Career Academy.
Sonny's achievements are numerous, both in Walton County and statewide. He has served in leadership roles in many civic and educational organizations. Sonny has served as Chair of the Walton County Chamber , an organization which he has actively supported for many years. In addition, Sonny served on the board of the Walton County Development Authority. He has served as President of the Georgia Member Services Association, and the Monroe Lions Club. Sonny is a member and Past President of the Georgia Future Farmers of America (FFA) Alumni Association, and a former District Governor of Toast Masters International. Also, he helped to establish Clean Walton, Walton Clean and Beautiful and the Greater Walton Builder's Association, and he served as the founding President of each of these organizations. Sonny previously served as the Walton County Representative on the Northeast Georgia Regional Advisory Council. Sonny has received numerous awards and honors including the Walton County Chamber of Commerce J. L. McGarity Citizenship Award, the National Honorary American FFA Degree, the Georgia 4-H Volunteer of the Year Award in 1991, and Lion of the Year. He is a graduate of the first Leadership Walton Class.
Sonny and his wife Bonnie are active members of Walker Baptist Church.
