Emergency Action Plan

In the case of fire, the following procedures are to be followed:

  1. Upon detection, call the nearest instructor or staff member to the scene, if possible.

Note: The instructor will follow through with the emergency action procedure. If an instructor is not available, the student detecting the fire or the student appointed by the instructor to handle fire hazards will follow the procedure outlined below.
  3. Determine the severity and type of fire.
  4. Begin immediately to control the fire with available and appropriate extinguishers.
  5. Report location, type and severity of the fire to the admissions office via a runner.
  6. If, in the judgment of the person in charge at the scene of the fire, the seriousness warrants, the fire alarm should be sounded.
  7. Evacuate the building upon sounding the alarm.

In case of personal injury, the following procedures are to be followed:

Note: If at all possible, the instructor or staff member should be summoned to the scene immediately. The instructor would then be expected to follow through with the procedures as outlined.
  1. Administer immediate first aid (start breathing--stop bleeding).
  2. Notify the admissions office of the location of the injured person and the type of injury sustained via a runner.
  3. If necessary, an administrator will arrange for transporting the injured person to a medical facility to receive medical attention.
  4. An accident report should be completed as soon as the injured has been cared for.
  5. Submit one copy to the vice president for academic affairs and file one copy in the department involved.

In case of illness, the instructor should arrange for emergency care depending upon the severity of the illness and/or arrange transportation to the student's home, if possible. If further assistance is needed, contact the vice president for academic affairs for assistance in caring for the student.
